All Star Tidbits

Pam Lightsey, District Governor

The Rotary year is coming up on the half way mark and what has been your contribution to your club the first half of the year?  It is not too late to get involved!  December is a special month for so many reasons.  We have another opportunity to gather with special friends and family.  We have an opportunity to give to those charities that are close to us.  We have an opportunity to make new goals for the upcoming year.  So much opportunity and how do you want to end this year?

There are a few deadlines approaching for early bird registrations so don’t miss out!  Register for District Conference now at http://www.jimbruce.org/District6920/District_Conference/2017/conference_home.php and take advantage of the early bird registration! The hotel registration is also available through the Westin on the conference webpage.  The deadline for International Convention 2017 has been extended since the website was down for two days. So register for Atlanta before December 17th before registration will go up an additional $75.

Did you know there are more than 15,000 companies that match gifts to the Foundation?  Double the impact of your gift by asking your employer to match your contribution.  To look up to see if your employer participates go to www.rotary.org/matchinggifts to see if they are listed.

Have you signed up for your gift to the Foundation to be a recurring gift.  Did you know you can sign up and have it charged to a credit card monthly, quarterly or annually.  You can simply fill out a Rotary Direct form or call them.  To get more information on this easy process please visit the web page https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/take-action/give/ways-give and look under Rotary Direct.

PolioPlus Update

Dear PolioPlus Leadership Team,

It is hard to believe, but half of this Rotary year is almost finished.  I know you all are working hard on holiday plans, end of the year fundraising, Million Dollar Dinners, and so many other wonderful projects and celebrations taking place in each of your Districts.  It's a magical time of the year when families gather, clubs are making a difference in their communities, and we take stock at what has been accomplished and what still needs to be done.

The good news is that we have only had 34 cases of the wild polio virus and 3 cases of the circulating vaccine derived cases.  This is a significant decrease over last year, especially in the cVDPV.  Making the switch to the Bivalent vaccine in 2016 made a big difference in these cases. The last cVDPV was in January 2016 prior to the synchronized switch worldwide to the Bivalent vaccine!  We haven't had any more cases so far in Nigeria, and we really have polio on the edge of eradication.  But we all know what a tenacious disease this is and how it can hide and try to trick us in to complacency.  We can't let that happen this close to the end.

For those of you who attended Zone Institute you know that we still have a gap of $1.24 Billion USD to meet our goals and accomplish everything that needs to be done to ensure that polio is eradicated.  Last year Zone 34 was # 2 in the world for District Designated Fund contributions at $458,046 (higher than this year's goal of $445.164.  Zone 34 (Caribbean, Florida and Georgia) was also #2 in the world in Total Giving to Polio Plus at $1,682,133 with Zone 33 (South Carolina up the coast to Maryland) right behind us at $1,630,787.

For the centennial year of The Rotary Foundation we are being asked to commit an average $2650 per club in our Districts.  I know that the Rotarians in our Zone are committed to seeing the end of polio and leading the world in that fight.  I am available to do presentations in your District to help you reach your District's goals.

At this point in our fight to end polio, receiving those commitments as early in the Rotary year as possible allows us to put those funds to use so we can stay on top of outbreaks like Nigeria.  With the World Fund match and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation match there is absolutely no better investment in your TRF dollars then to maximize them in eradicating polio.  The sooner we meet the financial obligation needed to put the nail in polio's coffin, the sooner we have a polio free world.

Please help us reach our 2016-17 goals!  Encourage them to get their PolioPlus money in now!  The sooner we end this war, the sooner those funds can be used to do more good in the world.  I would love to be able to celebrate surpassing our goals BEFORE the convention!

Please let me know how I can help you close out this year STRONG!

Prepare for Year-End Giving

As we approach the end of Rotary Foundation Month, Rotarians worldwide are energized by the Rotary Foundation centennial message. Annual Fund giving worldwide is up 11% through the end of October. And, on the heels of World Polio Day, giving to the PolioPlus Fund has increased nearly 22% from this time last year, as Rotarians are responding with urgency to the call to eradicate Polio.

Year-end stock & IRA roll-over gifts
As the end of the tax year approaches, now is a great time to promote gifts of appreciated securities and other gifts from investments prior to the new year.

  • Gifts of appreciated securities can benefit donors by receiving a potential tax deduction for the market value of gift and avoiding unnecessary capital gains tax on the appreciated stock. Learn more about making gifts of appreciated securities.
  • In the US, individuals who are 70 ½ and older can now make tax-free charitable gifts directly from a traditional or Roth IRAs.

Online Gift
Consider making an online gift to the Foundation and encourage Rotarians in your district to do the same. This is a great tactic to help clubs reach their centennial giving goals. Once you give, use the new Facebook frame to show that you're a proud donor.

ROTARY'S WORLD POLIO DAY EVENT CONTINUES TO GROW

Participation in this year’s World Polio Day live-streamed event continued the growth registered since it began in 2014.

Rotary, the world’s leading advocacy organization on polio eradication, held this year's program on 24 October at the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The event brought some of the biggest names in the campaign together to highlight the progress that has been made and to discuss what further action is needed to end the disease for good.

· The streamed program was viewed 100,131 times -- an 86 percent increase over last year’s viewership.

· New this year, more than 170,000 viewers watched a series of Facebook Live videos recorded on-site throughout the day, featuring U.S. Paralympian and polio survivor Dennis Ogbe, Time Editor at large Jeffery Kluger, and Rotary International President John F. Germ.

· Rotary members around the globe registered a total of 1,460 local World Polio Day events at endpolio.org.

CLUB NEWS

Perry Rotary Club

On November 7, 2016, the Perry Rotary Club hosted their 1st Annual “Salute to Veterans” luncheon.  It gave us the opportunity to acknowledge and thank the veterans in our community for their sacrifice and service.  We hosted over 70 veterans to lunch and conducted an excellent tribute to all veterans.  The program was presented by former POW Brigadier General (retired) James E Sehorn.  He shared is amazing story of faith and dedication that helped him survive 63 months of captivity in North Vietnam prison camps.  The program was followed by the dedication of a POW/MIA chair of honor at Cherokee Pines Country Club.  At this event, it became very clear “Freedom is not Free”.

Waycross

Waycross Rotary Member Al Joiner (left) appears with Raphel Maddox, City Manager (right), who spoke to members of the Club. City Manager Maddux, addressed Rotary member questions and updated the Club on current issues affecting Waycross involving the Development Authority, work with State agencies, road construction, Fire Services and business development.  Construction of a fire station, replacement of the Public Works building, among other things, are foremost, along with keeping Waycross a place known for the good things it represents and are being accomplished for a quality of life that benefits all who live and visit here.
