A Special Message Re:
RIP Ian Riseley's 1.2 Million
Trees Challenge: There's Still
Time!!
Dear District Leaders,
Earth Day, April 22, 2018, is
fast approaching, which is also
the “soft” closing date for
President Ian Riseley’s
Environmental Sustainability 1.2
Million Tree Challenge: “Plant
a tree for every Rotarian”.
Many Districts and clubs have
already engaged - and there is
still time!
To date, over 3,370 Tree
Planting projects have been
uploaded on the
Rotary Project Showcase.
You can review these projects
for inspiration and ideas by
logging into
my.rotary.org
and using
this link
to search for the keyword
"tree". (Hint: the search only
works automatically when you are
logged in!)
On the main
Rotary Project Showcase
page, you may also select the
keyword: “Category” and
check off the new phrase, “Environment.”
Tree Planting is an
environmental project that
counts towards the requirements
to earn
2017-18’s Presidential
Citation,
when you have reported it.
However, many Tree Planting
projects have not yet been
tagged in that category.
ESRAG,
the Environmental Sustainability
Rotarian Action Group, at
President Riseley’s
suggestion, also affords the
opportunity to report your
District’s and its clubs’
tree planting activities. Please
report your tree counting at
https://www.esrag.org/2017-2018-trees-planted-counter.
This will allow ESRAG to begin
to measure, track and share your
environmental sustainability
efforts throughout Rotary. For
ESRAG’s purposes, we are
giving credit toward the
challenge for projects that are
planned and funded by April 22,
2018, even though the trees
might not have been planted by
that date.
A District or club tree planting
event is a great opportunity for
“getting your hands dirty”
service, hosting a
multigenerational event for
family members, engaging members
of Interact and Rotaract, and
raising Rotary’s visibility in
your community. And as President
Ian noted, it’s a great way to
reaffirm that: “Environmental
Sustainability . . . is, and
must be, everyone’s concern!”
If it’s too late for your
clubs to organize their own
planting projects, they can also
still meet the challenge by
funding ongoing tree planting in
other districts, and with Rotary
partners.
ESRAG maintains a list
of them. If
your District is engaged with an
ongoing project that needs
resources, we’d like know
about that, too. To share that
information, or request specific
information that will help your
District be part of meeting
President Ian’s 1.2 Million
Tree Challenge, contact ESRAG at
trees@esrag.org.
Thanks for all you do!
Peter L. Moralée, PDG
ESRAG Chair

POLIO PLUS RECOGNITION
OPPORTUNITY FOR CLUB EFFORTS
|
|
|
|
|
Special Message from RIP Ian
Riseley & PIPP John Germ - End
Polio Now: Countdown to History
Committee Chair:
The RI
Trustees will recognize clubs
that give US$1,500 or more to
PolioPlus with a certificate of
appreciation during their
October 2018 meeting. These very
special certificates of
appreciation will be mailed as
part of the Fund Development
Banner mailing in
September/October.
Remember: In 2017 there were
22 cases of polio compared
to 37 cases in 2016. We are
getting closer to a
polio-free world every day.
Rotary pledged $150 million
to the End Polio (50 Million
annually) which the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation
will match 2 to 1.
Remember: Every dollar given
to PolioPlus brings us
closer to a polio-free
world.

RI Foundation Fireside Chats: Create
Special Evenings.
With the help of Zone 34
Foundatation Development
Officer Debra Lowe -
February and March brought
great programs on the work
of the RI Foundation to
clubs across our District.
These included 3 special
Fireside Chat
events - hosted by Rotarians
for guests - both Rotarians
and not-yet Rotarians - in
their area. A Coastal region
Fireside was held at the
home of Rotarian Barbara
Sullivan (pictured left W/
Leslie Mattingly & DGN Mike
Muldowney) on St. Simons,
with additional events held
in the Dubin area and in
Macon.
The St Simons Island,
Downtown Macon, and Dublin
Rotary Clubs
are to be thanked for their
dedication to this endeavor.

DG Hamsa’s March
Highlights!
What was our DG up to in March?
(“A TASTE OF SOMETHING
WILD” Says it Best…..)
Here’s just a sample:
He pulled out the stops
(and the craziest clothes he
could find) for our upcoming
All Clubs Conference -
working with planners in every
capacity.
He kept up with
EVERYONE, and EVERY CLUB
in person, by email & social
media, offering support &
encouragement to clubs &
Rotarians alike.
He worked with MAP Intl.
in Brunswick, as together we
draw closer to adding a THIRD
clinic to the initiative.
He focused on POLIO -
supporting and attending
Fireside Chats across our
District
He worked on ‘follow-up’
to his offical visits with many
clubs - focusing on special
needs and efforts - including an
in depth effort by Clubs in the
Savannah area.
He launched a taskforce
partnering Scouts & Rotary -
He continued to push
Entrepreneurship and Saving
Lives with Medicine Initiatives
across our District….

RLI Update for April Training @ ACC
Our District RLI team will offer
PART TWO only of the RLI
training at our District
Conference. The session will be
split between Thursday, April
26th - 1 to 5 PM, and Friday
April 27th - 8 to 11 AM.
If you plan to register PLEASE
do so IMMEDIATELY.
Our PRIMARY need is for a larger
pool of discussion leaders
(effectively the professors of
leadership in our Institute) - -
and for that, a Rotarian must
complete all 3 RLI parts as a
basic requirement for
certification. SO - we need more
people at every level of
interest in Rotary Leadership -
& willing to serve as Rotary
Leaders - in order to maintain
the highest level Leadership
Program.

A Brilliant Idea: Rotakids Clubs !
The first Rotokids club came
from the Rotary club of São
Paulo Brazil in 1996 when
the club was assisted at an
event by several children.
Since then Rotakids clubs
have grown around the world
and have been recognized
formally by Rotary
international. The Purpose
of the clubs is to teach the
children - through example
and projects - the objec,
principles, and ideals of
Rotary while stimulating
educational values like
dignity and respect for
others - character traits so
important and necessary for
forming a person of
integrity. Rotakids clubs
carry out at least 2
projects each year - in
support of their community -
and one focused on
Humanitarian Service …….

From District Governor Hamsa:
ALL CLUBS CONFERENCE
Dear Friends & Fellow
Rotarians - -
I invite all of you
to come, perhaps with
your families, or with
friends, to Jekyll
Island the last weekend
in April - for a
wonderful 3 day escape
to the Coast as we
CELEBRATE Rotary - and
our incredible 2017-18
Year of Accomplishments!
If youve been to
past District
Conferences - you know
its great fun. And if
youve not been - -
Heres what to expect:
First - Youll check in
for a weekend get-away
in a beautiful location.
Youll have lots of time
to explore Jekyll by
walking the beach or
riding a bike or golf
cart. You can enjoy
restuarants, cocktails
at sunset - the Turtle
Center, Historic
District - so much to
see and do (and you can
add on St Simons etc if
you wish).
But thats only part
of it! In addition to
your own time - youll
have opportunities to
celebrate Rotary:
Parties, dinners, some
how to sessions - and
you can attend alot or a
little - its all up to
you!
Youll be amazed by the
accomplishments of
Rotary Clubs, Rotarians
and Youth across our
District. Youll meet
new people from clubs
across east-central
Georgia. Youll meet
committee chairs and
officers youve worked
with this year. Youll
find another great
world of Rotary -
outside your own club.
Its truly ALOT of fun.
And yes - some of you
are thinking: Id like
to do more with Rotary
than just in my own
club. WELL Heres the
place to connect up! So
please, COME TO JEKYLL -
-
Everyone is part of
the team - and it takes
our combined talent and
skills - to MAKE A
DIFFERENCE!

2018 PETS - Atlanta -
FANTASTIC
Peach State President Elect Training
in Atlanta Feb 22-24 was indeed
FANTASTIC! Possibly our most
exciting moment came when RIPE Barry
Rassin joined us for Photos in the
District Hospitality Suite. WOW!
(see photo,
left)
It was wonderful to have so many
people with giving hearts - all
utilizing ROTARY as a way to make
the world; down the street & across
the globe, a better place! DG Hamsa
& DGE Margaret were proud, excited,
& so encouraged by all the energy in
the room! The PEs studied everything
from Data Entry and Meeting/Club
Management - to Social Media and
Public Relations techniques. DGN
Mike was on hand.
Now, on to ALL CLUBS CELEBRATION in
April.

GSE Friendship Exchange Team: Home
from India
Saturday evening February 17, 2018 @
Savannah International Airport, DG
Hamsa and Friendship Exchange
chairman Justin Godchaux joined
family of Team members to welcome
our travelers home from a very
successful visit to D 3150 in India.
Team members will now share their
experiences with Rotarians across
our District & at All Clubs
Conference - and will give a special
welcome to our incoming team from D
3150 soon!

RLI Concludes Successful Training
Thanks to the combined efforts of D
6920 Rotary Leadership Institute
organizing team led by Bill Jahn,
the discussion leaders from
Jacksonville, Florida and our
District, a very successful Rotary
leadership training concluded in
Savannah in early February. All
three levels of RLI training were
conducted. Discussion Leader
Training also occured - thanks to
help from the two PDG team of
Covingtons.
The next RLI session will be held at
the all clubs celebration conference
on Jekyll Island in April.

Atlanta RI Convention Follow-up:
Here'a an FYI from the wind down
efforts from the Atlanta Convention
last summer. Many will remember -
that in preparation for this
enormous undertaking, all Rotarians
across Georgia participated in up
front funding through a dues
surcharge - with the promise that
funds would be returned to the clubs
in Georgia. That IS happening.
In recent weeks, Club Presidents,
PEs, AGs and others have offered
suggestions about these significant
funds. So - we are taking the time
to thoughtfully consider the
possibilities - to give each club a
voice & options suitable & exciting
to them.
Stay tuned for more info to come!

DG Hamsas February Highlights!
What was
our DG up to in February?
ALOT!!
Heres just a sample:
He kept up with our
Friendship Exchange Team by
email & social media, offering
support & encouragement as they
traveled in India.
He worked with Rotarians
across our District at MAP Intl.
in Brunswick, packing survival
recovery kits bound for Puerto
Rico & elsewhere.
He
was on hand to welcome home our
travel weary but amazed
Friendship Exchange Team when
they landed as SAV. Intl.
He was on St Simons to
support a great partnership with
the SSI club and Rotary in
Puerto Rico for a hugely
sucessful GG/Foundation
fundraising dinner.
He worked on follow-up
to his offical visits with many
clubs - focusing on special
needs and efforts - including an
in depth effort by Clubs in the
Savannah area.
He attended & helped lead
PETS in Atlanta -
He continued to push
Entrepreneurship and Saving
Lives with Medicine Initiatives
across our District.

continues to show great success.

providing to indigent patients
through participating clinics in
Brunswick and Valdosta.

GREAT
Help for MAP Intl. - & Press for Saving
Lives w Med.
The Brunswick news recently ran
a great story on Rotary and MAP
Intl - relief efforts and our
groundbreaking Saving Lives with
Medicine Initiative.
Over 50 Rotarians from 10
different clubs volunteered to
help assemble 1000 disaster
healthy kits for MAP Intls
Disaster Relief program. These
kits helped people in Puerto
Rico and Texas hurt by last
years hurricanes. The packs
help prevent the spread of
disease for people staying in
shelters following disasters.
They contain antiseptic wipes,
soap and other basic hygiene
items.

A
Hint of Great Things to Come...
and there is MORE good news
from
Saving Lives With Medicine!
Through a collaboration between
Liberty Regional Hospital, the
Diversity Health Center, MAP
Intl., several Rotary Clubs in
the Savannah/Hinesville, and
D6920, these partners are
working to develop a completely
new model to help rural
hospitals in Georgia deliver
free life saving medicine to
lower overall Health Care Costs
for those in need.
This VERY significant step could
move SLWM from serving only
small clinics - to also serving
much larger providers. Watch for
more news on this in the future.
