All Star Tidbits

Pam Lightsey, District Governor

Greetings from Jamaica!

YES, I'm in Jamaica joining my classmates from Zones 33/34 to participate in a 29 District Global Grant Project.  You ask why? Two years ago when we all meet for the first time we had our class dinner Friday night and decided we wanted to lead our districts by having all 29 involve d in a project.  Two years later we are getting ready to dedicate an $85,000 piece of equipment at the local hospital, spending a day at an orphanage to build planter boxes and donate some much needed items for the children, and we will celebrate Saturday night with our Rotary International President John Germ and his lovely wife Judy.  President John Germ will be inducting all of us District Governors for 2016-17!

How exciting to be part of an organization that gives back to so many not only in our communities, but around the globe.  And it is just as exciting to be part of the 2016-17 Rotary year when we, in Georgia, will get to host so many from around the globe in June 2017.  All of sudden the world doesn't seem to be as huge as it was when I was growing up.

Of course, all of this wouldn't be possible without the Rotary Foundation.  So, let me start by thanking you for what you have contributed to the Foundation.  As we prepare to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation only the sky is limit.  We have a unique opportunity to show the world District 6920 supports the Rotary Foundation.  We will be holding our first Million Dollar Dinner with the other two Georgia Districts.  Our venue has been reserved, Georgia Aquarium, and our keynote speaker has also been confirmed, President John Germ.   Come to the All Star Seminar in Dublin to get more details.

Join me this year and let's celebrate #100ActsofGood in our district!

Pam
2016-17 District Governor

Centennial Celebration

“We should not live for ourselves alone, but for the joy in doing good for others.”
– Arch Klumph, founder of The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation celebrates it's 100th anniversary of doing good throughout the world with the 2016-2017 Rotary year. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is a 501(c)3 organization qualified to accept tax deductible contributions to both its Annual Fund and its Permanent Fund. Current and deferred contributions to the Rotary Foundation are recognized in many ways beginning with the Paul Harris Fellow which recognizes contributions totaling $1,000. Sustaining members contribute $100 annually and Paul Harris Society Members contribute $1,000 annually. Major Donors have made contributions of $10,000. Benefactors of the Foundation have committed $1000 from their estate while Bequest Society members consists of those who have included TRF in their estate plan or will at a $10,000 level.

The funds received by The Rotary Foundation enable the many programs executed by Rotarians including scholarships, grants, and group study exchanges or vocational training teams. RI is one of the world’s most effective and efficient funding mechanisms for executing projects in service to humanity around the world through a process called Global Grants. A Rotary Club or District (close to the reality and practical solutions) in a less developed country and a club or district in a more affluent country find each other and implement a project.

Our District 6920 projects have installed and/or repaired wells where there was no safe drinking water, have provided training resources to teach indigenous health promoters to return to their mountain villages to instill more healthy practices, has provided thousands of desks for children whose students previously sat on the ground, provided sewing machines to create micro-businesses, provided 3-wheeled vehicles to assist polio victims with transportation, and many other life changing projects. These Global Grants match club funds with district funds and TRF funds.
