Rotary District 6920 Newsletter - September 2016

All Star Tidbits

Pam Lightsey, District Governor

September brings lots of GREAT news for District 6920!!

The approval for District Grants has been received. Club Presidents should be receiving information from Gena Taylor, District Grants Chair, in the coming weeks. Please make sure all the documentation is kept for your project. This includes photos and receipts for your project.

District Conference registration is up and there are deadlines, so make sure to visit the District Conference webpage - http://www.rotary6920.org/District_Conference/2017/conference_home.php - for all details. There is an early registration rate, so take advantage of this. The agenda for District Conference is going to be finalized soon. District Conference 2017 will be including the Foundations Seminar/Grants Training in the plenary sessions on Saturday, so make sure to sign up to enjoy this EPIC conference! This will eliminate another travel date for clubs to attend on a weekend. There will be much to celebrate this year! A well informed district is a successful district.

Excitement is building as I visit clubs!  September is Literacy/Education month and is a GREAT month to do a literacy project. You can do something as simple as reading to a group of daycare or elementary school students. We will also be preparing to celebrate World Polio Day on October 24th. And many clubs are already getting contributions in place to celebrate Foundation month in November.  There is so much to do over the next few months!

Applications are now being accepted for District Governor 2018-2019. Applications are due to Past District Governor John Neely by November 9th.  Check the district webpage at http://www.rotary6920.org/  for more details.

If your club hasn’t selected your President Elect/Nominee, please do so soon. Preparations are being made for the President Elect Training Seminar to be held in Atlanta. The online registration will open in November, so begin thinking about next year's club leadership now. It is so important to have clubs plan because failure to plan may lead to planning to fail. We have so much to celebrate this year and so many clubs have really started to communicate about next year.

The details are being finalized with a possible Group Study Exchange Team to Brazil. Watch the blog and website for details that will be shared as soon as they are available.

What an amazing start to September!!

Remember you have the power to change one life!

Million Dollar Dinner Set for June 9, 2017
Georgia Rotary Districts 6920, 6910 and 6900 are raising $3 million for The Rotary Foundation in celebration of The Rotary Foundation’s Centennial Celebration, and you can be a part of this special milestone.

All Rotarians and spouses who make new gifts of $10K or more - either outright cash gifts or new bequest commitments - to The Rotary Foundation during the Foundation’s Centennial Year, 2016-2017, will be invited to attend a Million Dollar Dinner with Rotary International President John Germ at the Georgia Aquarium on the eve of the Rotary International 2017 Convention.

You can help The Rotary Foundation continue to improve the lives of others at the local level all around the world, and you can decide how you want your gift to be used.

Making a Bequest Society Commitment to the Rotary Foundation
You can be a part of this Centennial Celebration by increasing your existing Bequest Society commitment or becoming a new member of The Bequest Society with a minimum commitment of $10,000.  Bequests are gifts committed in your will, or by including The Rotary Foundation as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Becoming a member of The Bequest Society of our Rotary Foundation is simple.

Making a Major Gift to the Rotary Foundation
Outright gifts to our Foundation may be made by cash, check, credit card, publicly traded securities, or IRA Charitable Rollovers.

In December 2015, Congress passed a law the permanently allows individuals 70.5 years or older to transfer funds directly from an IRA to a qualified charity without increasing federal taxable income.  Charitable Gift Annuities are another way to make a major gift to The Rotary Foundation. With this method you can receive tax benefits and fixed payments for life. If you are interested in learning more, please contact District Governor Pam Lightsey.

A major gift to our Rotary Foundation in the amount of $10,000 or greater can be pledged and gifted over a 2 year period with recognition awarded upon the initial gift installment.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to be recognized for your generosity by our Rotary International President John Germ, make history in our Zone 34 and ensure “Rotary Serving Humanity”.  For more information, visit www.milliondollardinner.org.

CLUB NEWS

Metro Savannah Club Announces Service Partner
The Metropolitan Savannah Rotary Club is proud to announce it has selected Tybee Island-based Fresh Air Home as its 2016-17 Annual Service Partner.

Since 1939, Fresh Air Home has provided an overnight beach camp experience to at-risk Chatham County children ages 4-11. While on Tybee, the children experience the beach twice daily, field trips, picnics, arts/crafts, music, sports, talent shows, dance and movies. The nonprofit provides the children with all they need except a bathing suit and tennis shoes.

Fresh Air Home was chosen as Metro's Service Partner by a vote of club membership after receiving applications from 15 local nonprofits.

"Service is at the core of Metro Savannah's mission, and is something our members take seriously," said immediate past President Suzanne Kirk. "They voted Fresh Air Home as our service partner because they felt it allowed our Club to make a direct impact on the children of our community."

Over the next year, Metro Savannah expects to raise more than $10,000 for Fresh Air Home, and volunteer many hours making improvements to Fresh Air's property and helping to organize events.

In addition to Service Partner activities, Metro Savannah will participate in monthly service projects with a dozen other nonprofits over the next 12 months. Over the past year, Metro Rotarians completed 17 service projects, volunteering more than 400 hours with worthy causes across Savannah.

Packing the Semi for Broken Shackle Ranch

Rotary District Governor 6920 Pam Lightsey selected the Broken Shackle Ranch to receive a “semi” packed with supplies of daily living – paper products, soap, toothpaste, laundry detergent, sheets, pillows, socks, etc., all courtesy of the various Rotary Clubs in her district.

The Rotary Clubs from South Central Georgia including the Valdosta North Rotary Club, the Nashville-Berrien Rotary Club, the Valdosta Rotary Club and the Fitzgerald Rotary Club all stepped up to the challenge and encouraged each of their individual club members to bring some of the needed items.

According to the Broken Shackle Ranch website, BSR is a Christian-based youth home for young men ages 16-20 who are having difficulties adapting to the demands of adult life. As a ministry, a youth home, an educational facility, and a place for spiritual growth, BSR equips young men to develop their character and become responsible adults.

“Rotary Clubs, through the service motto ‘Service Above Self,’ give freely and often to help service organizations around the world with humanitarian resources,” said Valdosta Rotary President Molly Deese.

Valdosta North Rotary President Denise McKenzie said, “It is an honor to join together with other Rotarians in the District to impact the lives of these vulnerable young men. We salute the leadership of Broken Shackle Ranch and pledge our continued support.”
